Merlin BBC UK TV Show - Opinion Piece Part 7 - How The 2008 Series Reinterprets and Subverts Arthurian Legends

I was talking to a mutual friend about movies and TV shows in the fantasy genre and this friend bought up the fact how Arthurian legends have influenced most of them.

As that conversation progressed, we both agreed that the best adaptation of Arthurian legend was John Boorman’s 1981 classic "Excalibur".

However he seemed very amused when I told him that I was a huge fan of the 2008 BBC TV series Merlin. His opinion was that the TV series was "so childish, historically inaccurate and farcical" when he watched it.

I disagreed with him profusely and decided to make this post to outline my love of the TV series. I will share this post with this person so we can have further discussions on this topic. So here it goes:

Creators wanted to reinterpret Arthurian legend.

PROOF:

Julian Murphy, co-creator and executive producer: It all began in a restaurant on Kensington Church street, where I had lunch with the writer Jake Michie. And the pitch I gave him was very simple - It was 'I'd like to do the Arthurian story, but as an origin story in the same way that the Superman story had been done in [US TV series] Smallville.' And I think from there, it evolved.

But the decision that I think was at the heart of it, which was to make Arthur and Merlin contemporaries, rather than make Merlin the old man looking after the young Arthur, was there from the very beginning.

So for the 2008 series to collect Arthurian stories from various sources and try to repackage it to a modern audience is nothing new as the trend has already been established through works of T. H. White in The Once and Future King, Mary Stewart in The Crystal Cave, Mark Twain in A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court etc...

But it is through reinterpreting Merlin & Guinevere's storylines and using Magic as a motif that we get a brand new Arthurian story.

Guinevere

The name Guinevere means The Fair One in old Welsh.

To cast Angel Coulby, a woman of color as one of the most famous white woman in history was a revolutionary act by 2008 British TV standards.

In the legends, Guinevere is of royal blood. Gwen in the TV series is a servant of common birth who ascends to become a queen.

Here the audience come to see Gwen as the fair one based on the strength of her character and not the color of her skin.

In the TV show Arthur forgives Gwen's infidelity with Lancelot rather than having her sent to a nunnery or worse having her die. The old male authors were okay with Arthur bedding several women but expectation of chasteness placed on Guinevere always contained an undercurrent of misogyny.

In the TV Show, Gwen leads Camelot into the golden age, instead of being blamed for the downfall of Camelot due to her affair with Lancelot

Bradley James here confirms how in some legends Lancelot was in love with Arthur.

The gay subtext that was prevalent between Lancelot and Arthur in the historical legends is played out in all its glory between Merlin and Arthur .

Motiff of Magic

Throughout the history of Abrahamic religions, there has been a connection between magic and (deviant) sexual practices. generally speaking, everyone in the company treat Andromeda like seniors/girlbosses (because they are) while cheer4U are now the youngest and newest group they are kinda babies to everyone Andromeda doesn't have very close relations to anyone (being popular doesn't help here), but they are considered like a proper sister group to Ishin-Denshin, due to some matching concept elements and being the 'foundation' of the company Andromeda and Ishin-Denshin def had their little collabs, specifically vocal-based, since both group got mad vocalists also important to point out that Ishin-Denshin are huge fans of Andromeda, like every single one of them loves them, they def have been following Andromeda since their school idol days and they are still not over the fact that they ended up in the same company

This is just my feelings about Michi... because it have been an experience to like him. He’s definitely not the type of character that I usually love, but here I’m loving him a lot. Shipping aside he’s definitely the best character in Geats for me. I will not cover shipping preferences in this because that could be another topic XD and you know... let’s be real, no matter who your fav ship in Geats is, it will never be canon. If Geats production team is pushing the AzuAce agenda is just marketing, they know very well that sells (and Im buying it XD).

So... let’s go to see why you should love Michinaga as much as Ace does:

Those that knows me or know this blog... know already that I hated 01! I was prepared to hate Geats the same way that I hated 01 just because Yuuya Takahashi (the main writer). I didnt expect to enjoy this series as much as I do now. Moreless to love a character as Michinaga: A tsundere boy, self centered with anger problems, revenge and the desire to crush all Kamen Riders. The boy sound exactly like everything that I could hate. X,D

Michinaga was my fav from Geats pressconference... why? because he looked like a Kamen Rider Blade character... in fact he looked like the combination of Kenzaki and Hajime. (and I still have my head canon that Michi is their son X,D But that’s for another post X,D).

So yeah my like for him in the beggining was just something totally unrelated to the show. Was just his looks. I didnt care at all for him in the first episodes... in fact I didnt care for anyone in the show. Nor Ace, Neon, or even Keiwa seems like good people to the heart in the beggining. Entering this DGP to fulfill their dreams and go with it without really asking why? how? and when? Ofc, this is what this story is about, specially with a main protagonist that we know nothing about.

Michinaga was an average character (may be annoying yes) till the moment he die in early episodes (ep 15 I believe), the scene of him dying in Ace arms was really significant, specially because is the first time we see the boy being true with his words, saying to Ace: Give me a reason to believe on you. before pass out.

 Before the episode, every interaction of Michinaga and Ace have been interesting... because indirectly Ace have been advising him, with words: if you dont give up the chance to win will came. Surely... in those episodes Ace didnt see Michinaga as a rival at all... may be just like an annoying lad. But everything change when he returned from the dead. And this is where Michanaga character turn to get interesting for saying the least.

This point is where Michinaga turns into what we call an antihero. He returns from dead to know the other side of the coin of the DGP. He was almost killed by Niram. He was picked up by Beroba like a playing toy without escape from the womans hand (she literaly says: join me or I kill you right here). Michinaga was pushed between the sword or the wall, something that haters tends to forget, he had no option to join to Beroba’s side (he didnt enjoy any of that).

I was totally amazed by Michinaga’s guts. The boy survived Niram deadly attack, like an annoying insect that wanted to survive. Then Michinaga state: FUCKS the DGP. He stated he wanted to crush the DGP now that he knows more than the facade. And I was: GO KING, TOTALLY DO IT, even if it destroys you!! TTATT

I became a fan of Michinaga’s guts. It was the begining of the arc 2 of the series, and I was annoyed that the series totally forgot about the mistery of the DGP and Ace and the others decided to go along with all the DGP rules. So I was all go Michi go Michi, even if he looks like he was suffering because the buckle. TTATT

In this point we could say that Michinaga changed. Even his primary objective of revenge changed. And I was puzzled like Ace was XD because I truly didnt know what to expect from Michi. He was bad?! What he wanted to do? What the fuck is he thinking? Why he didnt join forces with Ace and others?. Deep down inside I wanted to believe that Michi was a good person even if he was converting in a Jyamato, because he didn't enjoy any of it, he didn't laugh, he didn't smile, he even had to overcome the shadow of his friend, and he did in the most cold way possible.

We could safely say that Michi fighted to the top of his position to be consider Geats rival. I believe that by the end of the JGP, Ace totally considered Michi his equall, his rival. It’s character development at his finest.

Now, since the bullgame that Beroba trampled (because she always got in the way of the true intentions of Michinaga, but he go along with her just for reach his objective) we start to know that Michinaga is not all EVIL, he even did the Bullgame for stop the casualities. And everything starts to fit together like a puzzle.

Michinaga became the biggest hypocrite, he won even if costed him everything. And now he has the power that he wished for (and is using it for good, even Ace knows, thanks sukiyaki scene of ep36) and to this point he have joined sides with Ace to get down the DGP. I truly LOVE IT. Michiniga embodies what a Kamen Rider is to it’s core: fight evil with the power of evil.

About Michinaga being the biggest hypocrite, I just have to say that there’s no better thing than a hypocrite that knows that is hypocrite. You know... everyone in Geats is a hypocrite to a degree, even the goodest boy Keiwa, after all Geats goes by the premise: trample on the desires of others to achieve your desires.

That Michinaga don’t deserve redemption? Why? The boy havent been bad and evil, he didnt have any option than join Beroba’s side, he didnt kill people, and all the people that died in the heaven or hell game was casualities, like any other DGP game before it. Kamen Riders couldn’t save all the people in the DGP games, there have always been people that died (like Keiwa’s parents for example). The better that our Kamen Riders could do now is to get down the DGP, Ace and Michi knows... and its only matter of time that Keiwa joins them.

Now I could truly say that I’m enjoying Geats and all it’s cast. We still have time for the power ups and for all the boys and girl to act as true Kamen Riders.

It’s a shame that Geats is not the best, but is not the worse either. I’m aware of it’s faults, may be there have been too much focus on Michi (and haters gona hate X,D)... but come on he’s great, and it’s obvious that his spotlight will have to tone down this last part.

Now there’s a lot of tiny details to say about Ace and the others (Keiwa, Neon) and also about the production, but probably I will write about it till Geats ends. We still have the last quarter to watch, there’s still things to happen. So I will wait till the end.

since I'm stuck during a long bus ride you get to hear my long long rambles about my dnd ocs!! (They're the ocs i think about constantly because they're the ones i get to Play With more lol)

They're all from different campaigns I've played. I'll give you quick info and thoughts about them in chronological order (aka, which one did i create first)

Michi Haasi

- fun fact his name is literally an endearment term for a cat in spanish (something like "little critter")

- which makes sense since he's half tabaxi, aka literally a cat boy. Full anime cat boy! He's a rogue that was trained as a spy assassin from a tender age because his parents got murdered in an unjust massacre carried out by a random noble lord. Now left to care for his little sister and brother, he took on a life of crime with high risk but high reward.

- since he specialized in being part of political conflicts from the shadows, he knew it would make him enemies that would put his siblings in danger. So he left them in an orphanage and cut all possible ties with them. He cares for them deeply though and sends all the money he can to the orphanage so that his siblings may be cared for properly.

- it feels weird not to mention it even though it has never come up in the story and i doubt it ever will, but Michi is a trans boy :3

- outside of the role, there was another player in my table that kept pushing for his character (a hobbit druid girl) to have a hardcore crush on Michi and i didn't feel comfortable with that so uh now my experience rping Michi has been soured a bit. Like yes i do love him as one of my creations but if i never play as him again i will not feel too bad about it (which is good bcus the DM got too busy with his own life so uhhh i guess we'll never play again!)

Ishana Aavrih

- My sweet tiefling paladin girl ♡ the joke i had is that she's literally just a nun with a sword. She's a tall and strong looking blue tiefling woman with fiery red hair. A devout follower of Fantasy Jesus (Ilmater) and her core beliefs were that anyone can be redeemed, anyone deserves a second chance, and that her duty was to protect other's from harm.

- i wanted her to be a pacifist but uhm since that campaign was heavy on the combat she did indeed kill many people. IN HER DEFENSE i did make her ask before the killing blows if they were willing to give up their life of Evil Deeds. No one ever did lmao

- her backstory never came up but: in this setting tieflings are loathed as an "inherently evil" race so Ishana grew up in a convent of a group of tieflings which main ideology was to "repent for the sins of their race". She was an orphan there so she was raised on these beliefs which marked her ideology forever. We love catholic guilt.

And to make it more tragic, she had a best friend growing up with her too in that convent and she loved her a lot, but her friend was more rebellious and mischievous (not bcus she was evil but bcus teens are just like that!). Anyway her friend gets killed to make an example out of her after a Nebulous Incident (aka i never worked out the details here ahdjjdjd) and Ishana is left heartbroken. It does lead her to escape and later on find comfort in the teachings of Ilmater because of the ideology of "everyone deserves a second chance" (since her friend deserved a second chance!)

- anyway in the campaign we had to stop cultists from bringing the apocalypse and one of the head Priestesses named Vannifer wanted help in stopping the apocalypse (because she was basically a slave to the Evil God trying to bring the apocalypse and she wanted to be free).

Vannifer was also a tiefling with a tragic backstory so when Ishana heard her tale and plea she immediately decided she wanted to help her no matter what! It became her life duty to try and free Vannifer from her chains so that she may be happy.

The rest of my party was pretty murder happy so even they wanted to kill Vannifer on several occasions so it became a running joke that only Ishana saw Vannifer as an ally (and she was!!! Like literally she's a NPC meant to help u!!! Why would u kill her!!!!)

Alongside this, in one of the cursed temples my party freed a group of Kenkus (bird people) and one of them was a small orphan crow boy and he immediately got attached to Ishana (and i became attached as well!!!!!!!!!!!) So Ishana adopted him as her son. His name was Purulento (pretty sad name in spanish bcus it's something akin to "infected wound"). Anyway i love him so much and he's my little son boy. My little baby. My sweet little boy. He became a cleric mostly so we could deploy him if any of our players missed a session so Purulento could fill that space in combat.

At the end of the campaign, Ishana realized she wanted to give up the sword and go live with her son and Vannifer in a cabin in the woods. So yeah she basically got her happy lesbian ending and sobs im so happy. BCUS PURULENTO HAS 2 MOMS AND GETS TO GROW UP IN THE HAPPY HOME HIS 2 MOMS DIDN'T GET TO HAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SOBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love her so goddamn much.

Eshuu Teevan

Ohhhh boy oh boy oh sweet jelly goddamn crackers HOW TO START WITH ESHUU MY DEEPLY BELOVED!!!!!! He lives rent free in my head even if i have played with him like maximum 7 sessions. Gonna try to TL;DR him bcus if not we will be here all DAY and maybe it's better if i show u the 40 powerpoint presentation i have on him later

- he's a satyr warlock! His patron is Caiphon, an old god and distant star. Akin to a lovecraft horror. Eshuu has a HORRIBLY debilitating Ego so when this elder god came to him in a dream and promised him the secrets of godhood it was all over.

- he's a scholar that loves nature, but most of all fungi! He's fascinated by the idea of Rot As An Extension of Life. In a better timeline he's some sort of druid ♡ we're not in that timeline ♡

- to understand what's wrong with him u gotta know that he lives in a world where Gods walk among them and each year the world celebrates "A Harvest" which is kinda like uhhh the hunger games but the prize is that the winners get to Ascend To The Heavens.

Eshuu being part of the Fey knows that the gods are capricious and not to be venerated. But his best friend Jakobi (an elf) is a devout believer who's purpose in life is to win the Harvest and ascend (as his people have trained him for). Knowing that his most likely fate is death, Eshuu tries to discourage Jakobi from making this his Life Goal but they fight and break up their friendship and something inside Eshuu snaps that makes him want to take over the gods and destroy them ♡ because he could do so much better ♡

- anyway Eshuu is my babygirl and i love him so goddamn much. His favorite spell is acid splash. He thinks he's owed everything. He's obsessed with one (1) guy that didn't let him have the last word. I could fix him but whatever is wrong with him is funnier ♡ He's doomed to go mad with eldritch knowledge and I'm crossing my fingers Jakobi is the one to kill him ♡

Cyril Nightclaw

- my most recent character! I love him lots! He's inside a horror campaign with vampires!!! Aaah!!!

- he's a dark elf (i forgot the term but they're the ones with Advanced Darkness) and he's sensitive to sunlight. He's a cleric of the grave! He dresses like a plague doctor!! He's a devout follower of Anubis!!! He's literally part of a pyramid scheme!!! This adventure is one of the first times he's been allowed outside of the temples!!!!! He's a hoot i love him.

- i say he's a hoot but mostly because i think he's incredibly endearing. He's stoic, genuine, and blunt. Party says he has autistic swag and i am inclined to agree. Perhaps even make canon.

- his one goal is to Maintain the Balance between life and death, which means that any time he sees an Undead Creature he wants and needs to destroy them on sight. This is made much more difficult because we have a sorcerer in our party that likes necromancy and he likes to bring walking cadavers around a lot. Such is life.

- in the campaign we are tasked with protecting this one lady named Irina bcus the Dracula controlling the region has targeted her as his Bride To Be. Cyril, being so new to the outside world, fell in love with Irina because she's the first pretty lady he's ever seen in his life. So you can see how this further motivates him to destroy The Goddamn Dracula Final Boss That Keeps Showing Up And Trying To Kill Us.

- he has a prosthetic leg because his parents tried to use him as a human sacrifice as a baby but the ritual failed (it did take his leg though). He was left abandoned in the steps of a temple of Anubis during a storm and he drowned. But Anubis revived him so that he may serve him. We love a guy that died once but got better ♡

Whatever brought you into his world and made fate steer your paths together, it'd have to be a few times before he finally took interest.

Whether he happened to see something you did or if you had a more personal and close experience with him, whatever it was you did, it surely caught his interest

It wasn't a crush at first... more like innocent curiosity or nearing admiration

He was more subtle in the beginning, short glances, brief greetings and such

He'll take you to either his or your favorite place.

Stargazing, watching the sunset, gang meetings, late night drives in the middle of the night, out to eat- you name it

I think with each "date" he just falls for you even harder, especially if you reciprocate some sort of feeling back like comforting him and touching him affectionately, he just melts in your embrace and absentmindedly smiles at the thought of you, sometimes mid fight or drive which is dangerous as hell and Baji often has to shake him out of it.

He really could be mid rocking somebody's shit and then he thinks about you and instantly leaves to go find you, like there isn't an all-out brawl going on.

The nail's set in the coffin when he shares his dorayaki/taiyaki with you, even pah does a double take (yes he's late, but even he realized before Mikey)

If you do anything domestic for this boy like giving him a bento, he's a flustered mess

"W-What's all this for, (n/n)?" "Oh, I just noticed you haven't eaten all day so I made you this!" "Wait, y-you made it? For... me?"

Mikey.exe stopped working

Don't worry, he reboots after a while and pretends like nothing happened and everybody's like :0 bitch...what? And he's like "Isn't (n/n) the best?" :D

I think when he actually realized how deep in love he was, it was probably near/on the anniversary of Shinichiro's death. He'd show up at your door because he was having a really bad day, bruised from a fight he couldn't care less about. He didn't bother knocking, actually, he second guessed visiting you and was about to turn away until you opened the door, bag in hand full of taiyaki's you personally made, and on your way to see him.

Your surprised yet worried filled eyes said everything when you looked at him, ushering him into your home and quickly asking if he was alright, all the while grabbing medical supplies to tend to his wounds.

He wasn't mentally the best in this moment, but somehow your warm smile made everything feel... right.

Your soft touches and the way you placed one of those cutesy band aids over one of his cuts, giving it a kiss and saying it'll heal faster that way. He had to bite his lip to keep from breaking out in tears.

In that moment he just wrapped his arms around you and cried, barely able to speak as he tried to recall his day, the name of his brother being choked out as you held him in your arms, assuring him that you'll always be there, giving him all the care and comfort he could ever wish for.

"Then this... t-his gang was here- and.. a-and shin-" "Shh, it's okay. Take your time. I'm here, i'm not going anywhere, okay?"

"You... promise?"

"Of course, I promise. Forever and always." 💞

And that's when his ideal future changed.

He wouldn't mind you being there with all of his friends, happily laughing and goofing off together.

But of course, it was more than that. It has always been more than that.

Because he loved you and wanted to wake up to you every day and go to sleep with you every night. Suddenly the idea of raising a family with you didn't seem so unrealistic if it meant he could hold you like this forever.

Mikey pulled away; tears dried to his face as he looked you over once again, still gripping onto you as if he were to let go... you would vanish before his eyes.

Glistening obsidian eyes traveled down to your lips then back up to your twinkling eyes as you ran your fingers through his hair.

You make a lot of valid points that I haven't seen and you have a good understanding of Japanese culture to take it into account. That said, what are your thoughts on other characters that the fandom attributes to being LGBT? (example. Hakkai, Ran Haitani and Hina as trans) Sorry for the inconvenience, I'm from Brazil and I used a translator for the question. =)

For one, when it comes to Hakkai…

This sure reads like a crush, anyways. It's mostly out there as comic relief, but the admiration this guy's constantly showing for Mitsuya's coolness and specifically his physical attractiveness and everything, welp, that just about places him in the LGBT somethingsomething bag to me. Maybe it won't get anywhere - it probably won't, cause again, comic relief element - but it's there, his silly little crush on Mitsuya or whatever we should call it. 

I'm cool with that! I enjoy and appreciate that Wakui comfortably includes interactions like this in his work. Y'know, along with everything else. With Koko, with Inui, with everything.

Like Chifuyu's feelings for Baji. That's another instance where I'm like "HMM. WELL HOW ABOUT THIS." 'cause, on one hand, the shounen genre sure loves its trope of "my dude, our bond is so deep I will die for you and live for you and I'm not naming what this means except that I'll call you my most important person in this life forever", but on the other hand, their flashback chapter is titled 'man crush' and… 12 years, Chifuyu? The rest of your life, Chifuyu? For his memory alone? Okay okay okay.

Personally, I find other characters to be very much up in the air. Too up in the air to call them canonly queer or canon-adjacently queer, though I do support most of those interpretations.

Ran? I love love LOVE a tall, evil, strong and effeminate bastard. Maybe he just happens to be straight and metrosexual and limp-wristed (I say this lovingly, admiringly), but that sure would be less entertaining than what I've decided in my head. Hanma? Even if you asked me, I wouldn't be able to say what he is, exactly, but if "queer" isn't part of it I'd eat my entire fist. Draken? My bisexual icon and also my beautiful wife. Don't get me started on all the other dudes with crushes on Mikey, we'll be here all night. 

But all that is just my view, lmao.

I will say, though, the interpretation of Hina being trans is one thing I respect - as always - but I don't partake in. I don't think an "if I were a boy, I'd do _" moment is anything but conversation, specially in the context of a culture where being a girl or a boy does condition and limit your experiences a fuckton. I'm not saying she can't be trans, of course. I'm saying that her talking about how she'd kick more butt than Michi if she were a boy (because she doesn't see herself doing that as a girl) doesn't necessarily mean that. Can be, everything is fair game in fandom, just not necessarily.

It must be hard hiding your feelings from your dear ones. It was hard for Takemichi too. He cared for a lot of people, though he could speak freely and truly to just a few, those being Naoto from the future and Chifuyu. Chifuyu was the only one in the present who knew about Takemichi’s situation and he was working hard on helping his best friend not being overwhelmed. He knew that it was hard for someone bearing the future’s sake, so he tried consoling Takemichi every time his friend seemed down. The problem was that this time, Takemichi didn’t tell Chifuyu anything.

“Are you future Takemichi?” asked Chifuyu suddenly.

Takemichi avoided his gaze as he started fidgeting.

“What are you talking about ’Fuyu? Future me? Are you out of your mind?”

“I’m serious ‘Michi… Is everything okay? Why are you avoiding my gaze?’

Chifuyu came closer to Takemichi, when he realized the boy in front of him was weeping. He couldn’t bear seeing his friend cry so he embraced the other.

“Shhh… Hey… Come on Take, tell me what’s wrong? Are you hurt? What happened in the future? What did you see?”

The other boy’s legs started trembling as he started falling to the ground, Chifuyu just fell with him while holding him close.

“I…” started the boy. “Everything is just so overwhelming! I’m giving it my all, but it seems that nothing is working! Whatever I try doing in the present it just makes things worse in the future. Now Naoto is dead and I can’t even get back, and…” he went silent for a moment, before he turned back to face Chifuyu “…y-you died ‘Fuyu… You died! You were dead! And I saw you die! You were next to me when it happened! Oh god Chifuyu…” he whimpered as he nuzzled his face in the other’s neck.

Chifuyu could only hold the boy harder as he whispered sweet things to the other.

“It’s okay now Take… I’m here and I’m alive… we’ll figure it out together… but for now let’s calm down.”

“B-but-“

“Hey! That’s it for today! You can take a break today! You don’t have to be a hero everyday.” smiled Chifuyu. “Anyway… it’s getting kinda late so why don’t I take you home?”

“Mmm… I don’t wanna be alone… c-can I spend the night with you Fuyu?”

How could he refuse Takemichi when he looked so tired and broken. Even though he was 26, he was still a small baby inside, who needed love and affection from time to time.

“Of course…”

The walk to Chifuyu’s house was silent and gloomy. Usually, they would laugh and joke about things, but they were just not in the right mood.

“Chifuyu?”

“Hmm?”

“Can I hold your hand?”

Chifuyu looked at Takemichi a bit surprised, but he nodded his head approvingly as he held his hand out. Takemichi reached for it and grabbed his hand and he intertwined their fingers.

“You’re so warm…” said Take, “I wish I could hold onto you for as long as possible… Y-you were so cold” sobbed the boy “And you weren’t moving. I-“

“Hey, hey, hey! Now it’s not the moment Michi…” shhh'' said Chifuyu as he hugged the other close “I said we'll figure it out together, ok?”

“Mmm”

“Come on now, we’re not far away from my house!”

“…okay”

They stopped hugging and they started walking again. It didn’t take long before they got at Chifuyu’s. They got their shoes off and went to Chifuyu’s room. Takemichi took a seat on the other’s bed, as the boy looked for some clothes to give to Take.

“Would you like to eat something?”

“Yeah I guess… Though I have no idea what” laugh Takemich..

“Guess I’ll just cook something for both of us. Would you like to take a shower by then?”

“Myeah. Can you give me some towels?”

“Yeah! Of course! Here you go.”

“Thank you…”

As Takemichi took a shower, Chifuyu managed to make some food and lay a futon in his room, only to be greeted by a beautiful, sad boy. He invited him downstairs for dinner and then they came back to Chifuyu’s room to sleep. Takemichi took the bed and Chifuyu took the futon. They closed the lights and went to sleep. After a while, Takemichi started to remember the future again and he just needed Chifuyu.

“Chifuyu…?” cried Takemichi

“Hmm?”

“Can you please come and sleep with me on the bed?”

It took a while for the boy to answer, but eventually he got up and went on the bed next to Takemichi. They were only a few inches away from each other, and suddenly Takemichi started hugging the other as he nuzzled his nose in the other’s neck. The other boy could just return his hug as he rested his head in Takemichi’s hair.

“You know you’re not alone, right? I’ll always be here for you, partner and I don’t want you to suffer. Promise me you’ll tell me everything from now on. I want to be there for you. Promise?”

“I promise Chifuyu” said Takemichi as he backed away so he could look into the other’s green beautiful eyes, but something else distracted him. His eyes started looking down at Chifuyu’s lips and he started leaning in. Surprisingly, the other was already leaning in and that’s how they had their first kiss. So sweet, innocent and pure. The green eyed boy moved his right hand and held Takemichi’s cheek as he kissed him slowly and lovingly. The blonde felt like crying. Everything felt like a fever dream. Was this even real? Even after all the bad events that happened in the future? He couldn’t possibly lose this. He wanted these moments to last forever. The blue eyed was so desperate that he forced the kiss and went for something a little more steamy, but he felt a hand on his head stroking his hair.

When did I create this blog? Around September last year (I guess). That was when I was searching for Killer and Healer script/novel translated in English, and since I found excellent reviews instead, I ended up creating this blog 'cause I too wanted to write.

Do I have any other blogs? Yes, unfortunately — I cannot access that anymore because I made that one around 2012 (when I used to be a feral kpop fan) and I was too young and too dumb to even memorize my password. Lmao.

Do I get asks? Yes, sometimes. The first one I got was when I was asked if I'm a human or not (but that idiot is a close friend of mine, lol) and I had to really analyze myself just to know the answer like I always did back in college days while solving accounting problems. Af. It was the hardest ask ever! xD

Why did I choose my URL? Evil (because I want to always be reminded about Beyond Evil) and Moonlight (because the word reminds me of Jiang Yue Lou and Chen Yu Zhi from Killer and Healer).

Dream trip: I'll start with the local tourist destinations here in the Philippines, apart from my own, another Southeast Asian country would be Thailand (just because I'm always mistaken as Thai, lol) then I would love to travel around some parts of East Asia particularly Japan and Taiwan, and the most interesting part is visiting Europe (UK, Italy, Ireland, Netherlands — Amsterdam (the Anne Frank House), Finland, Greece, and Spain (because one of my best friends is currently living there), actually I want to visit the whole Europe. XD), also Algeria, Morocco, and New York City (at the public library where Ash died peacefully reading Eiji's letter 😭, like I'll be having a Bananafish adventure).

Instruments: used to play guitar, and now I'm starting to learn ukulele, and would love to try the piano in the nearest future.

Average hours of sleep: weekdays would be 6-7 hours, weekends would be no sleeping schedule or if I'm lucky enough, 3-4 hours (I know it's not good for the health but)

Digimon Adventure: 2020 – Episode 49: The God Of Evil Descends, Millenniumon (Review)

Thoughts on the forty-ninth episode of the Digimon Adventure reboot series.

This was a pretty decent build-up episode.

The white foamy blob thing (WIP Kimeramon) is hideous. :D

Yamato: “Gabumon. Can you fight? Koushirou! Sora! Let’s go . . . stop them! You guys stay here to protect Patamon and Tailmon until they recover. Got it?” I love Yamato taking charge. In fact, reboot Yamato is just as competent a leader as reboot Taichi . . . which begs the question: WHY IS TAICHI THE LEADER? XD; (No, seriously, there is really nothing distinct about Taichi’s “leadership” in the reboot compared to the OG . . . he’s just the leader because he’s the main protag. That’s it.) But . . . we finally got Yamato uttering Sora’s name! uwu

MetalGarurumon “flying” looks so lame and hilarious, lol.

Wow, Hikari can actually emote! :o She definitely seems the most human she’s ever been in this series. I like!

I admit I laughed when Gomamon fell. :P But aww, Gomamon wanting to fight. <3

Komondomon trying to cheer the kids up with flowers was cute. I guess he isn’t completely useless/just transport. :P

Mimi comforting Hikari was A+ material. She is 100% the best character in the reboot - anyone who disagrees is just extremely biased. :P

Mimi: “Taichi-san sure smiles a lot. I like it when Taichi-san smiles. My grandpa usually has a stern face, but his smiles are just lovely too. Maybe I like people who smile.” Yo . . . we got any Michi fans up in here!? XD I liked Michi in the OG too. :3

The quick Taichi/Hikari flashback scenes were super cute - but it’s amazing that they did more for this particular sibling relationship than most of their shared screentime together so far. XD; 

MetalGarurumon v. Griffomon was fleeting and a non-event, but it was cool to see MGMon’s Grace Cross Freezer attack. :D

Millenniumon is freakin’ HUGE. Now that’s a big boi. :o

And WarGreymon returns! After one episode. XD; Can’t say I didn’t expect that . . . having the main protagonist “die” is pretty traumatising for little kids, so best to have him return ASAP. But I still wish it had been for a few more episodes. :P

But I hope Taichi doesn’t defeat Millenniumon on his own . . .

I loved the emotional beats of the episode. The kids’ interactions - especially the Mimi stuff - elevated it, because without them I would’ve just thought it was ho-hum. I liked seeing Jou and Mimi support Hikari - it was one of the few times I actually felt like the kids were friends and actually cared about one another.

I wonder how long the series can stretch the Millenniumon battle out for . . .

shiori would be my old enstars oc! shiori abe, if we’re being specific — he was the leader of my old fan-unit, maboroshi !

hello. hi :-) welcome to the ramble pit. i only have old art of him but here’s the most recent-ish?

a soft-spoken and gentle boy of... notably astonishing stature, despite his incredibly feminine face and delicate build (being 194cm). he has a very lonely and melancholic atmosphere about him — few people talk to him and seldom does he talk to others if he doesn’t have to. shiori is of a notably toothless disposition — he doesn’t seem to have much room in his body for any aggression or anger at all. i would even go as far as to say that he has a very defeated mindset (or maybe a far too willing sacrificial lamb).

in typical enstars fashion... nothing about any 3rd year student is clean and simple, shiori is no exemption ! his entire premise is centered around grieving and learning to let go of the dead (be it himself or others.)

the dead being referenced is best summarized as the ‘past’ for shiori. maboroshi is not actually his first unit — he was a formed member of a two-man unit called ‘fantôme’ with another fellow student, ren satou. fantôme is no longer an active unit, seeing as shiori would later disband the unit after ren’s passing.

ren is actually meant to be that student referenced in knights’ starfes event (the one that confessed to naru, before subsequently becoming incredibly disillusioned in eichi’s war and taking his own life)

it is critical to shiori’s character to mention the presence of love. he loved ren, romantically and platonically to the point where he was entirely willing to be crushed alongside him in fantôme’s final stand against eichi’s new system (granted, he knew that ren didn’t feel the same type of love back but shiori wasn’t seeking romantic reciprocation from ren — he just wanted to love ren.)

fantôme is actually based around the phantom of the opera... except i take it and i spin it on it’s head 🤪 erik who is transfixed with christine is played relatively straight (at first) by ren who is one of the first people to ever validate shiori’s beauty — however the plot would later be turned on it’s head as the tragedy unfolds. ren and shiori ultimately switch roles in who is the phantom and who is christine. where christine dignifies the innocent monster that is erik by extending her love to him, ultimately gracing him with humanity... the same is not applied to ren and shiori. shiori exists as the innocent monster that was not granted the mercy of death, and instead he must grow to learn even the most crippling aspects of what it means to have a heart so human.

maboroshi is actually a relatively new unit... and is still pretty underground (nice pun)... they have a rather traditional and supernatural feel to them — a recognized charm point of their shows are their distinguished elegance and grace!

the unit is comprised of: shiori abe, yasu hisakawa, and michi kurama.

the entire.... ‘why was maboroshi formed’ is kinda long and im now realizing how much of a spider web my entire maboroshi plotline was but 🤪 TEEHEE the summary of it essentially is michi (who’s greatest flaw is in the fact that he is such... a charismatic trailblazer that he continuously tramples other people and leaves them broken) ends up trampling his own friend (the only friend who had managed to cling on for this long to michi... in other words, yasu).

yasu is... ironically, best known for how little of a presence he has — michi, wataru, and shiori are the very very few people who have ever managed to remember yasu extensively. when he is trampled by michi, he begins to crumple under the pressures of eichi’s war; he is being pushed to the same edge as many other unfortunate students of yumenosaki academy .

shiori is brought back to yumenosaki with a desperate plea from michi to please save his friend — michi can’t bring yasu to listen to him alone, and michi isn’t at all capable enough of talking to him. in the end, it results in the very shaky foundations of maboroshi, a trio of three boys who have always existed outside of the image of what it means to be a sparkling idol and have been left for dead in eichi’s war for perfection. it seems they all have a lesson to learn in reanimating their corpses.

that wasn’t short at all. but anyway. theres probably more to talk abt concerning shiori (and maboroshi as a whole... and then some) but i have weasel brain and a plate of corn dogs so ✌️ until next time

while Aito tries to train like the rest of her classmates (though sparring) his quirk really isn’t a fighting quirk, so yeah, most of her training happens out in the wild. He mostly trains on his classmates and teachers, but will occasionally go out of the school and try to charm random people she bumps into ;) . she continues his training after graduation, and keeps getting better and better the longer she’s in the field.

kinda a tough question here, lemme try to explain how Aito’s quirk works; so pretty much it’s not really Aito’s gaze that makes it work, like his pupil doesn’t have to be trained on someone. His quirk works through her iris (the yellow bit). it looks normal most of the time, but when being used, it becomes wildly complicated, confusing the eye of her target and scrambling their brain a bit. pretty much, the brain normally simplifies everything so our eyes can kinda take shortcuts and let us quickly take in as much info as possible, but Aito’s irises are so overly complicated that the target’s brain is forced to focus excessively on them to keep up, making them very suggestible. that’s why Aito has to speak his commands, so that the target’s brain confuses Aito‘s voice for it’s own command (and also why the target won’t do anything too complicated or out of character. if the brain thinks too hard about what it’s doing, it could fall out of Aito’s control) his quirk would be better described as a sensory overload, but without the panic or any negative feelings. It actually feels rather nice to be charmed, like being a hot room with a cool fan blowing in your face, or drinking a warm drink in the snow. Very positive, yet opposity feelings at once if that makes sense

(side note, when Aito gets older, she can control when his quirk is “turned on” but while she’s in UA, it just constantly on all of the time, hence his choice in hairstyle)

so! To answer your question, if someone doesn’t know about Aito’s quirk, they have 0 clue that they’re being charmed, and will have 0 memory of whatever they do when charmed. If someone does know about her quirk though, their brain will recognize the feeling and will be able to combat it (she can still be pretty effective, but he still has to work harder for it) if someone knows about the quirk, their vision will get a bit darkend around the corners and may see quick flashes of darkness as their brain kicks off to focus on Aito’s irises. it takes a lot of willpower to fight Aito’s charms- or, just a very very simplified vision, like Aito’s mama has (if someone asks, I’ll talk later about Guadelupe’s vision, it’s actually pretty interesting) (side note again, if someone tires to fight her charm, it could leave them with a gentle headache <3)

and FINALLY Aito’s quirk doesn’t require her to physically see, as long as her target can see her, it works :)

Aito decided to become a hero because… he’s perfect! And he wants everyone to know how perfect she is!! And everyone thinks heros are perfect!!! And soon EVERYONE will see how PERFECT he is!!!!!!!

when Aito’s father left them, he was cemented in Aito’s brain as someone who couldn’t see how perfect he was. Aito just wants to be seen by her father, but because he doesn’t know who he is, he assumed that the only way to get the man’s attention was to prove how perfect she can really be, and the only way she could figure out how to do that is by becoming a hero.

after he gets her license, he immediately starts heroing like others do, with big fights and capturing villains and saving people… but… that really didn’t work for her. No matter how strong or fast or clever she was, he couldn’t match up to his peers in the heroing world.her quirk just wasn’t made for that kinda work. He took some time off to figure himself out, and after a bit of time (and a lot of conversations with Michi, both professional and personal) he finally figured out that his best place to work was behind the scenes, collecting information and going undercover in villain hangouts and social events. he wears her support hero badge with pride. (and uhhh still sometimes helps with big fights and capturing villains and saving people. Hey! She spent good money on his hero suit! He’s gonna use it!!)

ooohhhh ok! This is the question I really wanna answer!!!

so! to clarify, Aito absolutely thinks he’s all that and a bag of chips, like even in the deep parts of her brain, she thinks he’s The Blueprint. I would almost describe her as narcissistic bordering on psychopathic. THE ONLY REASON I WOULDN’T DESCRIBE HER AS THIS THOUGH- is because of her reasoning

so- Aito was raised by his mama exclusively, and he thinks his mama hung the moon and painted the stars. Like she is a capital M capital B Mama’s Boy. He absolutely adores his mama and thinks she’s absolutely without flaw or defect. (She didn’t instill this in him, Guadelupe’s just a very nice lady and Aito was really messed up after his father left, so she clung to any semblance of a good parent she could find. (Even though he’s technically out of this stage already, and it’s much less pronounced, something similar happened when he met Sato. Guadelupe never dated after Aito’s father “because my mijo is the only person I’ll ever need” and because of that, Sato is the first positive male role model in his life. Most of his acting out actually is a product of wanting to keep Sato’s attention on him, and to subconsciously keep him from leaving like his father did))

Aito’s brain pretty much went “ok, my mama is Absolutely And Positively Perfect… and she really really loves me… she wouldn’t love a kid with flaws… so I must also be perfect!!” And that’s why she thinks she’s all that! She thinks his perfection is as obvious as the sky being blue, and his want for validation just his way of checking out the window and seeing the color or they sky. they sky is blue, and everyone knows that, and Aito is perfect, and everyone should know that!!

but also she’s promised multiple people that she won’t steal from strangers. In the classroom setting, people know that when your wallet or your ID card or your phone go missing, you should talk to Aito before you do anything else, strangers don’t know that, so whatever she takes is for keeps. He really doesn’t like keeping things from people as much as he just likes the act of pick pocketing, so if someone asks for their item back, Aito will immediately return it and will probably explain how and when he took it if they let him. only problem is, you obviously can’t do this with strangers, so instead she does other things, like asks them for a harmless favor that someone would never do for a stranger (“hey there, can you help me move tomorrow?” “Hi! Do you mind if I take your picture?” “Hello sir! can I look through your phone for a sec?”)

at the moment, it’s usually an adult who knows about her quirk and tries very hard not to be charmed (think sato). she can still charm adults obviously, but it’s a bit harder to do bc she’s just a little baby. maybe when she trains more she’ll get stronger, but at the moment, that’s her limit (sorry if this is a weird answer, willpower doesn’t exactly come in like a points system irl, so I can’t be like “7 willpower!” yk?)

I talked about this before with Rin’s blind eye (something I’ll probably add here) but being blind in one eye wouldn’t stop Aito’s quirk (as long as you look at her with your non-blind eye, you can still be charmed, hence why when looking at Aito with only her blind eye, Rin wasn’t charmed)

the only was to not be charmed by Aito is to just not see her eyes, so total blindness or some kind of visual abnormality (like her mama has. somebody PLEASE ask me about Lup’s eyes. I have diagrams) but! if a person is seeing, but can’t hear Aito (be it because of deafness, or some issues in the environment like loud noises or earmuffs) a person can be charmed, but cannot be commanded <3

STUFF I DIDNT LIKE ABOUT MYSTREET SEASON 4:

• ok but the animations here are great. actually tho they're so fluid and clear. Credits to whoever made them!!

• and now let’s do the real thing

• ok so first off this is where the actual plot starts. I know that some people were getting bored of the monotony of the slice of life episodes so they liked it. Again there’s nothing inherently wrong with having it but you have to remember that these characters most likely weren’t written to be in a plot and I say this because their personalities are funny and lighthearted. Their clearly meant for comedy. This also makes them redundant for plot since most of them a few characters barely have any development which is probably why like half the cast was dropped. im not sure how far back jess had planned the plot but needless to say most of the characters wouldn‘t be able to fit there. Travis, Katelyn, KC and the sk’s just dipped for the whole season and even when kc, Travis and Katelyn do show up in s5 their personalities really took a beating

• WHERE DID LAURANCE AND DANTE GO?? We never see them after s3. its probably because their personalities were too funny for plot but laurance was a shadow knight in mcd and since the whole of mys is so hyped up on the whole ‘mcd and mys are connected’ thing by all means he should’ve been there too

• it makes sense that since the lodge is jointly owned by the Ro’meaves and the Lycans, Garroth, Zane and Aaron- and by extension, Aphmau- would come along. it make sense that they would ask Lucinda for help- she’s a skilled witch and has been their friend since high school. theyre literally neighbors. it makes NO SENSE to being Kim- a girl whom they’ve barely ever interacted with and whom they barely know- to a place meant for close family to go to. Ok from a plot perspective yes Kim needed to be there but Aphmau logically doesnt know that yet.

• how does ghost/emmalyn even exist?? We’ve seen emmalyn and kenmur in s1 and they’re ok. not dead or anything. Yes I know that this is mcd emmalyn and she is directly referencing mcd Zane when she says that’s the only name she remembers from when she was alive but that raises two questions- first, how can both mcd and mys versions of her exist at the same time?? and second, what exactly happened between her and mcd zane?? It sounds like she either hates him way more than she loves kenmur (or she’d remember him too) that it’s the only name she remembers or its Stockholm Syndrome.

• I feel that since the plot demanded a ghost vessel thing that was the only reason Aphmau brought Kim. it’s pretty clear that Dante and laurance wouldn’t fit the role because of their personalities so she just remade an older character and changed her completely right down to her skin to fit the plot. her whole personality changes with it- look at her I mean she even becomes more open when she talks. Again this only happened because none of the existing characters could fill that role because IT WASNT MEANT TO HAVE PLOT

• no one likes you michi girl take the hint

• seeing liochant brings back meMoriEs

• what was that potion that lucinda made and which Garroth threw on Zane?? its clear that it cured him from the effects of the forever potion but the bigger question is WHY DONT THEY USE THIS IN S6?? Ok yes in s4 Aphmau gets freed by the power of love(TM) but that doesn’t mean you do that for everyone

• as someone who liked Laurance’s character I miss him :(

• ok there’s WAY TOO MANY PROBLEMS with Ein and his villain shtick. Ein is basically some obsessive werewolf yandere boy who has an unhealthy obsession with aphmau and hates Aaron. and the cherry on top is that Aphmau is his HALF SISTER. THATS INC*ST. That’s GROSS. What is it with Aphmau antagonists and not having a clear motive or backstory?? mcd Zane and Ein both suffer from this and it shows. there were definitely better motives to give him- he doesn’t have to be centered around Aphmau all the time!! And even if you don’t want to go to all the trouble of rewriting the plot you could at least make it so that Ein knows that he and Aphmau are related. Maybe he wants a perfect sister instead and he’s willing to go to any lengths to get her there. it would still be dark and serious but it would be SO MUCH BETTER than the current plotline. Also showing the contrast between his pdh and s4 self and then not giving any semblance of an explanation really makes it difficult to imagine where it all went wrong. yes Michael definitely had something to do with it but to what extent?? How much is Ein actually in control of?? Is he under the influence of a forever potion when he turns Zane, Lucinda and Aphmau to his side?? Is he still under its influence when he fights Aaron?? look I get that they can’t reveal everything but leaving out THIS MUCH and not even revealing it in s6 makes it very difficult to accurately nail Ein’s character.

• how is Aaron even revived?? is that Irene?? how is she here and what is she doing here?? Can we have answers pls. also it makes no sense that she saves Aaron TWICE- once in s4 and second in s6. How does death even work here if Irene can just swoop in and bring them back to life. i feel like none of the villains ever count as threats then because you know that a cryptic mysterious goddess who somehow looks just like your girlfriend will revive you.

• how did Aaron even survive?? No seriously how?? We know that there’s no service or wifi up there at the lodge so using their phones is out of the question. i don’t think Lucinda would be able to conjure up a whole medical team for Aaron. and they're on a MOUNTAIN. It takes precious time to get down from it. for context, even if they sent Garroth (since he’s the fastest) down to get help they’d have to wait for him to reach the village area at the base of the mountain, get a phone, call for help, wait for said help to arrive and get Aaron to a hospital. meanwhile Aaron is bleeding out from multiple gashes on his chest made at like point black range that are critical at best and fatal at worst. (his only saving grace is the snow he’s on which would help to numb the wound because its cold but he has like FIVE deep chest wounds and the snow isn’t even on his wounds.) Ya sorry I don’t see how he manages to survive.

• did I mention that I miss Laurance?? • Why is Aaron not at a hospital I don’t even see a ventilator or oxygen mask near him. Listen I’m not a medical expert but those gashes landed straight on his chest which means straight on his lungs and dangerously close to his heart. how is he alive. how is he not choking on blood right now. we know he’s bleeding out- I’m pretty sure one of the doctors even says “Mrs Lycan, we need to draw more blood for your son.” yes he’s bleeding out why is no one trying to idk stop the wound through pressure with a cloth or something?? (Note: it’s been a while since I’ve watched s4, so if I do get anything wrong thats why!!) also why are the werewolf doctors so chill about Aaron’s ultima eyes? like yes they’re doctors they could’ve been sworn to secrecy or maybe they work for the Lycans but Derek is shown to be really paranoid about anyone finding out about Aaron being the ultima. how does he know they won’t tell it to someone else??
